"Blending stylish old
world shop spirit, inspired design adventure, and a utilitarian sensibility
with an industrial edge."
Appropriately named for its
8' x 16' layout, this intimate shop sells an eclectic mix of furnishings,
antiques, paintings, books, and home accessories. Paulette Pascarella, the
owner of Room, is a seasoned interior decorator and fills her small space with
exquisite merchandise. As the store’s card boasts, items are “all chosen for
their line, form, and color.”
Among the unique goods you
will find at Room are Indian spice boxes traditionally used for storing dye,
kuba textiles woven from raffia plants, and Votivo candles available in flavors
such as Red Currant, Teak, Cedar & Sage, Fauvé, and Night. But perhaps most
unusual about this store is the way extraordinary and hard-to-find items are
displayed in an accessible way.
There’s an interesting
history behind many of the collectibles at Room. For example, Paulette recently
sold a customer a table from the 1939 World’s Fair. In describing how she
selects antique tools for the store she says, “I chose them not only for the
function they may have once had, but also for the sculpture they are as an
object. ”
Paulette also proudly
features handmade pottery by Jonathan Adler, who in addition to his owning his
own store in Soho, sells his graphic pieces at Barneys and Todd Oldham.
To compliment Room’s
intimate setting, customers are encouraged to linger and get to know one
another. In summertime, chairs placed on the sidewalk make a concrete porch
where they can relax and socialize.
Room is a gem of a store
full of many treasures. So stop by the shop, browse, and enjoy...
