In the early 1940's “Joe Biggie” used a pushcart to sell clams in the half shell corner to corner. This was primarily a warm weather business. Joe would stroll along and shuck clams throughout the mile square area of Hoboken. The people would not only enjoy the freshness of the clams, but also they were mesmerized by the art of shucking clams by “Joe Biggie,” and his young son “Brother Biggie.” At this time two clams were sold for a mere nickel!
Then in 1946, Biggies moved into its prime location - 318 Madison Street. Biggies was operated the business from March to October. The clams were then sold at 40 cents per dozen.
For the next 18 years Biggies remained opened from March through October. Then in the mid sixties Brother Biggie was given control. A year round Biggies is what the community requested. Renovations were in order! The business continued to flourish.
Then in 1975 the current owner, Steve, Biggies son in law came into the business with lots of new ideas and ways to have Biggies get to the next level. The menu expanded as well as the seating capacity. Steve has been in charge since 1983 utilizing all the same concepts that have been taught by “Brother Biggie.”
