Mile Square Theatre takes Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors
to the Jazz Era of the 1940s
Hoboken, NJ – August 25, 2008 – Mile Square Theatre, known for their own highly accessible brand of classical theatre that drew crowds last year when they set A Midsummer’s Night Dream on the Hoboken waterfront of the 1950s, is now aiming their sights on the 1940s Jazz Era as a backdrop to Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, thanks to the vision of director Michole Biancosino. In this version, running 9/26 through 10/12 at the Monroe Center for the Arts, Antipholus of Syracusa — in search of his identical twin from whom he was separated at birth — wanders onto a vibrant, colorful island where he thinks he hears a soundtrack under everything he says, people break into jazz riffs as they walk, and odd things keep happening to him, either by magic or witchcraft. Strangers seem to know his name, women claim that he is their husband, and one man even hands him an expensive gold chain. In this 1940's-inspired, jazzy world, Antipholus and the rest of the inhabitants try to figure out — amidst the screech of trumpets and the sexy howl of saxophones — why the whole world seems turned on its head. The Comedy of Errors is one of Shakespeare’s most farcical and slapstick-filled comedies that will easily appeal to all ages.
NOTE: Mile Square Theatre will also offer weekday matinees for school groups.
