The Environment Committee was kept busy in the earlier years when we:
Attracted hundreds of concerned Hoboken citizens and joined with the Weehawken Environment Committee to prevent the construction of an oil storage facility consisting of 18, 13-story high oil tanks on the Hoboken/Weehawken waterfront.
Organized the Waterfront Coalition of Hudson & Bergen which succeeded in convincing the State of create the Hudson River Walkway - the now mandated, thirty foot wide, free public access, waterfront promenade extending from the George Washington Bridge to the tip of Bayonne.
Began the first newspaper recycling program in Hudson County (1973) using the proceeds to provide "shrubs in tubs" and lower boxes to be placed in front of the home of any resident requesting them.
Held candidate forums for every mayoral election since 1977.
Initiated tree planting program for the city and creation of the Hoboken Historic Preservation Commission.
Secured placement of the Erie Lackawanna Terminal on the National Register of Historic Places.
Worked with organizations form Weehawken and Union City to draw attention to and halt the construction of a gasification plant (an incinerator) in our city.
Joined with other Hoboken organizations to protest and prevent sensitive development on the waterfront.
