With diverse influences that include cubism, surrealism and the Mexican muralists, my oil paintings are a series of luminously colored pictorial spaces that are consequent of personal experience as filtered through dreams, visions and illusions. The images of anonymous figures in common settings depict ritual happening combined with feelings of sexual tension that are woven in with a quiet elegant motion.
The most powerful influence in my development as an artist has been my relationship with my dear friend, teacher, and mentor in life, Julio Alpuy. Alpuy, from the original Joaquin Torres-García workshop, El Taller Torres-García (the most significant art community of its time in Latin America, 1943-1962) inspired my passion for painting.
My relationship with reality and my dreams form the arena that inspires me to paint. It is the mystery of life which intrigues me, as does the furtiveness of the natural world. To explore these mysteries, I have chosen the influential power of paint as a means of expression. Painting allows me to smooth out some of life’s crudeness; to realize peace and tranquility. I’m a firm believer that as creative beings, we have to continuously convey hope and innovative ideas – if only through the visual. I celebrate life and nature.
