The African Well Fund
|
|
The African Well Fund (Also available on MySpace) is a registered non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to raising funds for building and maintaining wells in Africa. It was formed in October 2002 by a group of U2 fans inspired by the media coverage of Bono's May 2002 trip to Africa with then-Secretary of US Treasury, Paul O'Neill. Struck by the relatively low cost of building a well and the enormous difference that a well can make in the life of a village, we were convinced that raising the money to build a well was an easily-achievable goal. It was from this conviction that the African Well Fund (AWF) was born.

December, 2004 - Indian Ocean Tsunami
|
|
In the early morning hours
of December 26, local time, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, the fourth-largest earthquake
ever recorded, shook the bottom of the seafloor 100 miles off the western coast
of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. When the rumbling stopped, about 25 meters
of one tectonic plate had slipped under another, triggering a massive tsunami that
inevitably reached the rim of the Indian Ocean, destroying nearly everything in
its path. As of December 28, news estimates put the death toll at 80,000, with some
sources claiming that number could rise above 100,000 after all is said and done,
making the event one of the most deadly natural disasters in all of recorded history.
Millions of lives have been disrupted in Sri Lanka, India, Somalia, Sumatra, Thailand,
and Indonesia, as well as many other countries, hundreds of thousands of buildings
have been destroyed, and millions of people are trying to piece together their lives
in the midst of the loss of loved ones and homes. And, to top it all off, there
is a significant danger that the death toll my climb ever higher due to a lack of
medical supplies, clean water and food, and the proper removal of the dead from
the streets of coastal cities.
As such, the countries forming the rim of the Indian Ocean need help. The United
States has pledged $35 million, Japan $30 million, the United Kingdom $28 million,
Australia $27 million, Saudia Arabia $10, among many others, but much more is needed.
Private contributions would do much to help to mitigate the effects of this incomprehensible
disaster. There are many organizations now accepting donations that will go towards
disaster relief:
American
Red Cross
United States Agency for International
Development
United States Fund for unicef |
