Dear Anthony David’s,
I just wanted to tell you that when I came by the other morning, tired, and
in dire need of substance for my stomach you were there for me. So much so that
after sampling your delicious eggs benedict ($9.75) and surveying my friend
Adam’s steak and eggs ($9), I had to come back for more. But this time I came
back for dinner. Along with my appetite I brought a new accomplice (Jenn), and
we were bummed to hear you wouldn’t let us sit outdoors (it was 9 o’clock and
you must have thought we looked like lingerers… we won’t hold it against you
that the noise ordinance in Hoboken prohibits outdoor activity after 11 p.m.),
so instead we opted for a table in your newly renovated backroom. The space was
somewhat loud and small, but nicely decorated, despite the oddly placed
eyesore, also known as the bathroom. Light paint coated the walls in the dimly
lit room and linen lined the tables. We sat by the window and Jenn was happy to
see her booth seat came complete with throw pillows. Well now you’re just
asking for us to linger now aren’t you?
Our waiter, Jamie, dressed in a tie and apron, was soon to greet us, and
after asking if we preferred still or sparkling water, was back with a bottle
and two glasses. (Yet nobody told us this sudden interest in our water intake
was going to cost us $4.95.) Next, another waiter came round offering an
assortment of complimentary bread. I opted for the baguette and Jenn took the
toasted French and within seconds our waiter appeared with imported olive oil
for our bread. We took a minute to look over the more than adequate menu that
ranged from pasta to grilled lamb chops and finally made our selections. I
chose the Veal Bolognese with porcini, arugula, and tagliatelle ($19) and Jenn
decided on the Seared Ahi Tuna with olives, capers, basil, fresh marinara, and
penne ($17). While we waited for our entrees we were surprised to receive
bruschetta topped with goat cheese and hummus, compliments of the chef (and no
one even knew I was reviewing your restaurant). Jamie explained it was to wake
up our taste buds, in preparation for our impending meal.
It finally arrived, after we were beginning to wonder if the goat cheese
surprise was in lieu of our dinner. But all was forgiven when we saw it looked
too good to eat, and after taking a bite discovered it was. The veal was so
tender and the pasta and marinara it was mixed in with, the perfect
combination. Although I must admit I was wishing I had more pasta to go along
with all that mouthwatering meat. However, Jenn wasn’t having similar
complaints. Despite also being very good she was unable to finish her meal…
even with my help. But that didn’t stop us from sampling your dessert menu. To
difficult to choose between the chocolate ganache cake ($8) and the baked apple
($8) with cinnamon gelato we opted for both. Even though the chocolate ganache
cake was good it was a bit too sweet even for a chocoholic like myself. The
baked apple on the other hand was one of the best I’ve ever tasted, and thanks
in part to the accompanying cinnamon ice cream is a definite must-try.
Many thanks for a great experience. I look forward to seeing you again real
soon.
Sincerely,
Lisa Costantini
P.S. Don’t think I forgot to tell people about your kitschy space in front
that was bustling when I was there for brunch. Your quaint gourmet market where
patrons can choose to eat if they want a more casual atmosphere showcases an
array of prepared foods available for catering.
